The Immortal An Oratorio – composed by Mark Simpson (young musician of the yr in 2006, Now, aged 26, he has just been appointed as the BBC Philharmonic’s Composer in Association (2015-2018) – one of the youngest ever composers to be given such a role with a major British orchestra.) Simpson’s new work for the Festival is The Immortal, an oratorio inspired by John Gray’s book ‘The Immortalization Commission’, an investigation into the Victorian fascination with séances. It features a libretto by award-winning poet, Melanie Challenger and is performed by the BBC Philharmonic, EXAUDI – Britian’s leading contemporary music ensemble – and Manchester Chamber Choir with solo baritone Mark Stone.
